Pandemic Related Mental Health Crisis Leads to Challenges in Rural Emergency Rooms

The United States is currently experiencing what may be the worst mental health crisis in its history. As suicide attempts and ideation increase, along with drug and alcohol abuse, our Emergency Rooms are becoming the epicenter of this crisis. Staff and nurses who have been battling COVID-19 are now serving as the front lines of the psychological aftermath. Most states are woefully unprepared for this, in much the same way as they were for the pandemic. Facilities with proper staffing and equipment to help these patients are full, leaving those who are already psychologically distressed left bound to beds so they don’t hurt themselves, the staff, or escape and harm patients and visitors. These are challenging times and overworked, understaffed ERs are doing their best to help these vulnerable people. However, without knowledge of the issues, most people and politicians who can make a difference don’t know that our hospitals and these people need their help. We need action now and we need medical professionals with proper training ASAP. Lives are at stake, please help by spreading awareness.
